Lighting in Interior Design

When decorating your home you must pay particular attention to the lighting. The importance of lighting cannot be underestimated. A change in the lighting can drastically alter the look and feel of the room.

There is a wealth of different types of lighting that can be employed to achieve a rooms’ ambiance. From scattered lamps to spotlights, chandeliers to desk lamps, the choice of interior lighting is vast and can be incorporated into most any room in the home.

Here is a look at the different types of lighting solutions and their effects in different rooms in the home.

Ambient Lighting

Ambient lighting is a hidden light source that washes the room with a warm glow. This lighting creates very few shadows and tends to flatten a room. A good example of ambient lighting is Japanese paper lighting or wall scones. They both produce ambient lighting, are employed to great effect in a diverse range of environments. Temporary lighting effects are best achieved by employing a dimmer to ordinary lighting fixtures.

Accent Lighting

Accent lighting provides interest to a room. When employed, accent lighting draws attention to an object or architectural feature in the room. You need only a bulb and a shield to direct light to the desired focus. Halogen spotlights and opaquely shaped table lights are prominent accent lighting solutions.

Task Lighting

A more practical solution to interior lighting is task lighting. Bathing you in a cool glow, task lighting is perfect for a wealth of relaxing activities. From reading to knitting and just plain relaxing, task lighting alleviates any issues of eye strain. Task lighting isn’t obtrusive, and offers little, if any, glare.

Spot Lighting

Spot lighting can be used to draw attention to a particular feature of the room. Aesthetic lighting is purely decorative, illuminating a sculpture, or feature of the room. Accompanied by other types of lighting, spot lighting can promote a wonderfully comfortable environment, affording you the perfect setting for a range of activities.

Lighting is essential aspect of interior decor. No matter your environment, you should always consider how you intend to illuminate aspects of the room. By employing the right lighting effects you can create an environment with the right look and feel – one that you’ll want to spend hour upon hour relaxing in.
